How to Reduce Picking Errors in Your Warehouse

Your goal should be to automate everything after understanding what needs to be deleted first.

How to Reduce Picking Errors in Your Warehouse

You might have heard of Elon Musk’s 5-step algorithm. If you have not, I’ll recap it below:

  1. Question your constraints

  2. Delete parts or processes

  3. Optimize

  4. Accelerate

  5. Automate

This algorithm is golden if you are a warehouse manager and you are trying to decrease picking errors from your employees.

Your ultimate goal for a specific task should be automation.

After you have gone through the algorithm and deleted the parts and processes that you think are not necessary, you can then start thinking about optimizing your warehouse with humans in the loop and eventually automating everything.

This is the best way to eliminate picking errors from the warehouse.

Few Other Techniques

  1. Use barcode or RFID to scan items
As easy as it sounds, the barcode or scanner beeps "yes" or "no" if the item you have picked is right or wrong.

  2. Use a pick-to-light system
Another system where you have bins or shelves that light up based on where the item is, so the human in the loop does not make any errors by picking items from the wrong section.

  3. Keep employees trained weekly
Always go back and train the employees weekly or at least monthly. It keeps them fresh in mind.

(Bonus)
Track errors made per employee

You can keep track of errors made per employee and chart out a graph to decrease the errors. Use this tool constructively, as it might hurt the individual emotionally.
